Urinary Incontinence

At Greens medical center we offer all the support and treatment options for urinary incontinence. We have an expert team of doctors and nurses to discuss the reasons and causes and to schedule treatments and to take proper care from all the discomfort caused by urinary incontinence. Performing some pelvic floor strengthening exercise will also help.

Urinary incontinence is a condition in which there is urine release involuntarily due to loss of the urinary bladder control. This condition can be temporary or permanent and is more common in women. With an increase in the age the muscles that support the bladder weaken and this leads to urinary incontinence. This condition can also be formed due to various health reasons.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

There are mainly 3 types of Urinary incontinence as discussed below:

Stress Incontinence – this can be caused by stress induced from some type of physical activity. For some persons while heavy coughing or sneezing the muscles that hold the sphincter muscle are put in stress and release urine.

Urge Incontinence – if the person was not able to use the toilet for a long period of time this can cause the urge to release urine and causes urge incontinence.

Overflow Incontinence – this condition occurs when the bladder is not emptied completely. This causes dribbling of remaining urine from the bladder unintentionally.

Total Incontinence – when there is damage or weakness to the bladder muscles this result in losing the capability of the bladder to hold urine. This cause urine passes frequently.

Causes of Urinary Incontinence

  • Several reasons cause urinary incontinence such as:
  • Aging
  • Weakness of muscles that surround the bladder
  • Damage to pelvic floor muscles
  • Presence of cancer
  • Constipation
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Presence of kidney or bladder stones
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity

Few lifestyle habits can also cause urinary incontinence including alcohol and smoking. It's important to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise and to eat a well balanced diet. Limit the caffeine and alcohol intake. Also maintain proper weight to have healthy body.

Diagnosis of Urinary Incontinence

The doctor diagnoses urinary incontinence by conducting a physical examination to check the pelvic floor muscle condition. For males the rectum is examined to check whether the there is any enlargement of the prostate gland. Other tests include urinalysis, blood tests, PVR test, stress test, cystogram, cystoscopy and urodynamic testing.
