Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology

Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology department include specialized gynecologists to evaluate and treat medical conditions that occur in the uterus, ovaries, vagina and vulva of babies, children and teenagers. In recent era, due to various environmental and physical changes, children and women up to age of 22 have several gynecologic related issues and problems. They need special care and consideration to address their emotional and physical requirements. Some of the common medical disorders that are treated under Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology are discussed below:

  • Vulvovaginitis is the inflammation of the vulvar and vaginal tissues that is caused by infection. This can cause vaginal discharge. This is mainly due to the thin vaginal mucosa with an alkaline pH in children. This changes as they grow and become more resistant to infections.
  • Genital trauma in adolescents can be caused by injury in the private area. This can lead to abrasions of the genital area.
  • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is another common disorder experienced by young women. Heavy, frequent menstrual bleeding causes physical and emotional breakdown of the patient. This can also lead to anemia. The normal menstrual cycle is once in a month with 28 days cycle. The menstrual bleeding lasts for 7 days. With menstrual irregularities, the bleeding will be heavy and may last for more than 7 days and may occur frequently. This is because the variation in hormone levels that affects the ovulation process in the menstrual cycle.
  • Endometriosis is described as the formation of glands outside the uterus which causes severe abdominal pain.

Pediatric and adolescent gynecology involves the sectors of pediatrics, dermatology, urology, endocrinology, surgery, oncology, psychiatry, genetics and physical therapy. All gynecologic problems stumble upon infants and children are specific to these age groups and necessitate different skill sets.
