Placental Abruption

The placenta is the link that connects the baby and the mother. Placenta is developed from the uterus wall and connects to the fetus and acts as a nutritional channel to the baby. Its helps in the nourishment of the baby and carries oxygen to the fetus for its growth and development during the pregnancy period.

What is Placental Abruption?

In rare cases the placental gets ripped apart from the uterine wall completely or partially. This is referred to as placenta abruption. This cuts the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus and can cause complication.

There are no specific causes for placental abruption. However any injury to the abdominal area or quick leak of amniotic fluid can cause abruption of the placenta. Placental abruption commonly occurs during the last trimester of pregnancy.

Placental Abruption Symptoms

Symptoms of placental abruption include:

  • Heavy bleeding from the vagina
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Severe back pain
  • Softness in the uterine Muscles
  • Severe uterine contractions
  • Fainting / Pallor

Pain in the abdominal area and back occurs spontaneously with heavy bleeding. The amount of bleeding depends on how much part of the placenta has been separated from the uterine wall. In some rare cases there will be no bleeding as the blood gets stuck inside the uterus.

Causes of Placental Abruption

Few factors can also cause placental abruption such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Maternal age
  • Abdominal injury or accidents
  • Lifestyle habits including smoking and use of cocaine
  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Blood clotting disorders

Placental Abruption Treatment

If any bleeding and pain is noticed during the pregnancy period it is important to consult your doctor as soon as possible.

The ruptured placenta cannot be fixed to the uterine wall. However if the placenta abruption is minor and if the heartbeat of the baby is normal then the doctor suggests staying in the hospital for close monitoring. If the baby has reached full term growth and if the placenta abruption is severe then immediate C section is carried out to avoid any risk and complication to the baby and mother.
